MAGRITTE René (1898-1967)
AUTHORIZED MANUSCRIPT with 4 original DRAWINGS on reverse; 2 pages in-8 (20.5 x 13.5 cm) with black ballpoint pen. Draft of reflections on the painting, crossed out, with four drawings on the back. "There is nothing to say about painting, except to hear what one is listening to. We look at the painting to see. Seeing is not thinking about what we are looking at. [...] How can we paint images that do not invite Thought to be distracted? ...] I know only one conception of the art of painting that answers this question: the one that makes me take care to paint images that show things of the so-called real world in such a way that they no longer correspond to ideas or feelings. ...] Only images that show things - free of their question marks - seem to me to be worth painting. These images show things and do not "represent" anything or anyone. It is we ourselves who must "represent" them, that is to say, to be - like them - the Mystery, which does not ask questions"... The drawings on the back, in black pencil, probably painting ideas, represent a rock, a coffin with a lyre, a tree trunk from which a row of trees grows, and a bearded figure with a bust, pipe and hat.
