SAINT BARNABÉ in carved, polychromed and... - Lot 15 - Aguttes
SAINT BARNABÉ in carved, polychromed and gilded walnut, rough back. Standing, he places his left hand on his chest and holds the Gospel of Saint Matthew on the other, which is one of his attributes; monoxyl base bearing the inscription S. BARNABA ORA PRONOBIS and the signature and date E.me Fodere Fecit & Pinxit, 16 7* . Savoy, Etienne Fodéré (active from 1670 to 1720), circa 1675 H. 53 cm Small accidents and missing fingers PROVENANCE Private collection, South of France Born in Bessans on 10 April 1649, Etienne Fodéré apprenticed with Antoine Clappier, the town's famous sculptor. He is the author of several master altars and sculptures in the Maurienne and Tarentaise regions where he had to leave to find markets. Among his works, several altarpieces and sculptures are particularly noteworthy, the altarpiece of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Bessans (1683), swept away by a flood from the Arc in 1957, that of the Chapel of Saint-Clair de l'Ecot in Bonneval-sur-Arc (1703), others also in Bourg-Saint-Maurice (1683) or in Peisey-Nancroix, as well as the glory beams of the churches of Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise (1672-1675), Sées or Saint-Barthélémy in la Thuile de Vulmix (1683). A scholar in the art of drapery, he introduced mannerism to Savoy; not only a sculptor but also a painter, he took care of the polychromies by using glazes on a silver leaf background in the Italian alla mecca style and warm colours. This statuette of Saint Barnabas, signed and dated, is thus a precious testimony of the Savoyard baroque. Fodéré seems accustomed to affixing his signature on his works, sometimes with a commentary, as on the statue representing Saint Clair at Bonneval, unfortunately stolen in 1976, "made in Bourg-saint-Maurice this 12 aost 1703 easy to repeat - difficult to do well", which shows a certain humour in this artist.
