ANTONIO GALLI BIBIENA (PARME, 1697 - MILAN, 1774)
Study of Corinthian capital city Pen and brown ink, wash 24 x 30 cm Signed lower right Click here to bid The Galli-Bibiena family has based its artistic reputation, following Antonio, on the production of theatrical sets particularly remarkable for their complex splendour and perfect proportions in a space structured by a precise perspective. Inventing a richly ornamented style borrowed from Baroque architecture and sculpture, eight members of the Bibiena family designed and painted, from 1690 to 1787, sets for operas or ceremonies for the greatest courts of Europe. The Habsburgs are among their most generous patrons. These decors, made of materials that were not very durable, did not stand the test of time, but the splendour of their preparatory drawings evokes the rich ornamentation of the final works.
