ATTRIBUÉ À EGBERT VAN HEEMSKERCK (HAARLEM, 1634 - LONDRES, 1704)
Tavern scene, man holding a mug Pen, black ink and brown ink wash 19.3 x 15.6 cm Click here to bid Egbert van Heemskerck is influenced by the work of his father and the painter Adriaen Brouwer, known for his innovative genre paintings, which are spontaneous and vivid depictions of peasants, soldiers and members of the lower classes of society engaged in everyday activities: drinking, playing cards or dice, smoking, playing music, or fighting, in taverns or in the fields. By contributing to the development of the trunk genre, those facial studies with exaggerated features, Brouwer had a great influence on the next generation of Flemish and Dutch genre painters, including Van Heemskerk. His preference for coarse subjects, such as here the drunken figure asleep on a bench with a jug of wine in his hand, established his reputation as a highly satirical painter who was often struck by censorship.
