"I am told that you are suffering from a body, and sad from the soul. The disproportion between the evils of this world and their remedies or palliatives is too obvious to be devised outside books and sermons. All philosophy and human wisdom are reduced to supporting the necessity of afflictions. In this, heroism has supported you wonderfully, for more than twenty years: and more than anyone else I feel and admire the high valour of your great character"... Rome August 25, 1877.
