Dominic Lucero, a young dancer recruited for the tour, toured with Michael Jackson from 1987 to 1989, which logically places the gift of the jacket during the rehearsals or the early dates of the Bad World Tour.The link to this period is based on the testimony of Dominic Lucero, who states that he received the jacket from Michael Jackson during rehearsals whilst working as a dancer on the Bad tour, and signed a letter of provenance in 1991. Dominic Lucero died prematurely in 1994 from lymphatic cancer, aged 26, which gives his 1991 letter particular documentary value, that of a contemporary account of the events written by the protagonist himself.Contemporary photographs show the artist wearing a red and white jacket of a similar style, but certain differences in cut and detail (notably in the pockets but also in the armholes) lead us to regard these images as contextual iconographic references rather than definitive photographic matches for this particular item.Subsequently, the collector David O’Connell acquired the jacket and documented its provenance in a letter dated 2016.The red and white college-style jacket bears a clear and legible autograph by Michael Jackson in black felt-tip pen on the chest.

The item presented here belongs to this generation of ‘Bad era’ gloves, designed to withstand the rigours of touring whilst retaining the dazzling brilliance characteristic of Swarovski Lochrosen crystals, which catch the spotlight beams.David Pencer’s account, dated 6 March 2001, places this glove within the context of the Bad World Tour, as Michael Jackson was preparing for the series of concerts in July 1988 at Wembley Stadium. He recounts that, during a rehearsal for the performance on 14 July 1988, whilst standing backstage on the stage right, Jackson threw the glove at him with his right hand during the choreography for ‘Billie Jean’ to get rid of it for a moment. Pencer is said to have kept it in his jacket pocket so as not to lose it during the session, then returned it to the artist. Michael Jackson is said to have then confided that he no longer liked the glove, which had been damaged by the concerts, and invited him to keep it as a souvenir.Given this account, the significant wear and tear on the fingers—consistent with the pressure points from the microphone on the palm of a right-hand glove—and the central role of ‘Billie Jean’ and the crystal glove in the Bad World Tour, it is reasonable to regard this as a stage glove from that period, most likely worn during several concerts on the tour, in the cities immediately preceding Wembley: Paris (Parc des Princes, 27 and 28 June 1988), Hamburg (Volkspark Stadium, 1 July 1988), Cologne (Mungersdorfer Stadium, 3 July 1988), Munich (Olympic Stadium, 8 July 1988) and Hockenheim (10 July 1988). A late addition to Michael Jackson’s stage wardrobe, this left-hand glove adorned with Swarovski crystals dates from the final phase of his career, when certain accessories became instantly recognisable visual hallmarks. The accompanying documentation places the item in Seoul on 25 June 1999, during the ‘Michael Jackson and Friends’ concert, following on from the major stage appearances of the late 1990s.Its provenance is based on several distinct documentary elements. A letter from Brian Morse (2015) states that the glove was worn during performances in Seoul before being handed over at the end of the medley, according to the author’s account. A certificate issued by Knaisz Auctions (2017) describes the item as a left-hand “Billie Jean” glove adorned with Swarovski crystals and bearing a Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush label, and links it to the 1999 Seoul concert based on information recorded in the auction catalogue.DNA analyses carried out in 2018 by Alliance DNA Laboratory and ARCpoint Labs on two gloves (lot no. 30 and lot no. 38) and the Billie Jean trousers (lot no. 15) reveal the same male profile, obtained from samples taken from the linings. This consistency across several items of clothing suggests they were worn by the same person and provides evidence in favour of the outfit having been used on stage. However, these tests, carried out privately and without comparison to a reference profile associated with Michael Jackson, cannot constitute proof of use by the artist. They should be regarded as supplementary documentary evidence to the provenance already established by written documentation.
