Black sports jacket with panels, featuring the ‘Panthers’ logo, signed in pen by Michael Jackson on the front. According to a handwritten letter from Gayatri X, daughter of a butler at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai, the jacket was worn by the artist during his stay at the hotel and was given to her as a thank-you gift during the Indian leg of the HIStory World Tour in the autumn of 1996. Gayatri’s account describes the context in detail: Jackson’s arrival in Mumbai, heightened security, and the distribution of gifts to the Oberoi staff at the end of his stay.
This account is echoed in several reports published on Michael Jackson’s visit to the Oberoi Hotel between 30 October and 1 November 1996, which emphasise his closeness to the staff and the mementos he left at the hotel: photo sessions in the suite, autographed messages on the furniture or cushions… These sources confirm the general context of a well-documented stay, even if they do not specifically mention Gayatri or this jacket.
