"All the staff at Aguttes are dedicated to beauty, and to fostering emotional and intellectual exchanges between collectors"
Do you own an object, an artwork, a piece of furniture, a piece of jewelry, or a collection you are considering selling? The first step is to have its value assessed by specialized experts.
The accuracy of an estimate relies on the combination of rigorous expertise of the good and a precise understanding of the market. Identifying, documenting, and qualifying an artwork (description, attribution, dating, provenance, and bibliography) is essential; understanding market trends, artists’ price levels, and buyer demand is equally important to ensure a successful auction.
An independent auction house for more than 50 years, Aguttes’ strength lies in its international network of buyers and its in-house specialized departments (from contemporary art and design furniture to Asian arts, collectible watches and cars, and jewelry, to name just a few).
Here are the different steps to sell at auction with Aguttes.
HOW TO SELL AT AUCTION ?
1
Prepare your project
To carry out an estimate or inventory of your goods, gather all the information you have about your item:
Photographs
Dimensions, signature, date
Provenance, history
Condition
This information will allow our specialists to conduct an initial and accurate assessment.
2
Contact a specialist
To begin your auction project, several options are available:
Fill out the online estimate form, available on the specialty pages of our website. Simply select the category corresponding to your object and provide the information and visuals you have. Your request will be directly forwarded to the specialist of the relevant department.
Contact a specialist by email or telephone to discuss your good and your project.
Reach out to an Aguttes representative in the regions, in Brussels, or in Geneva for a first local contact.
If you have a group of goods covering several specialties or in the context of an estate, our Private Collections department will coordinate your project.
3
Arrange an appraisal appointment
Our specialists travel throughout France and across Europe to provide complimentary and confidential valuations. A meeting may take place in person or remotely (by phone or video call).
This meeting allows to:
Confirm the estimate
Determine the most appropriate type of sale
Define a tailored auction and marketing strategy
4
The contractual stage
Before the auction, a contract is established between you and Aguttes. This sale contract formalizes:
The estimates
The potential reserve price
The commission
The resources allocated to the auction (promotion, transport, and insurance)
5
Shipping your good
We assist you in organizing the shipment of your good to our auction room in Neuilly-sur-Seine or to our storage facility. You may also choose to arrange transport with your own shipping provider.
6
The auction
Your good will be included in a Live or Online auction, depending on the strategy defined with the Aguttes specialist. Each department organizes four Live auctions per year aligned with key moments in the art market, as well as Online auctions. You may attend either remotely or in the auction room.
7
After the auction
Following the auction, the department will inform you of the price achieved for your good. Payment is usually made within four to six weeks. It is calculated based on the hammer price, minus the agreed commission.
Aguttes acts on your behalf to collect payment from the buyer.

Hammer: the moment during the auction when the auctioneer awards the lot to the highest bidder.
Estimate: a price range established by Aguttes specialists to indicate the probable market value of a property at the time of sale.
Sale catalog: a publication (printed and/or online) presenting the lots offered for auction, with a description, estimate, and image. It is an essential tool for attracting buyers.
Seller’s commission: the commission deducted from the hammer price covering expertise, marketing, communication, and organization of the sale. The amount is specified in the consignment agreement.
Unsold: a lot that did not find a buyer during the sale, generally because the reserve price was not reached. A new strategy may then be considered with the specialist.
Lot: an object or group of objects consigned for sale. Each lot is described, appraised, and offered individually.
Sale contract: a contract concluded between a seller and Aguttes authorizing the auction house to offer a good for auction. It specifies the estimate, seller’s commission, potential reserve price, and the general terms and conditions of sale.
Reserve price: a confidential minimum price agreed with the seller below which the lot cannot be sold.
Net proceeds to the seller: the amount received by the seller, corresponding to the hammer price minus the seller’s commission and any applicable taxes.
Seller’s payment: the payment of the net proceeds to the seller after the sale, made by Aguttes within the timeframe specified in the consignment agreement once the buyer’s payment has been received.
Capital gains tax: a tax applicable in certain cases when the sale of a good generates a gain compared with its acquisition price. The tax amounts to 6.5% of the hammer price and applies to items sold by a private individual for more than €5,001.
There are two cases of exemption:
If the good has belonged to the seller for more than 22 years (a form must then be completed and returned with the required supporting documentation)
If the seller is a foreign national and not resident in France
Live auction: an auction conducted in the auction room and broadcast live on the Aguttes website. It allows buyers to bid both in person and remotely in real time, encouraging strong bidding dynamics.
Private sale: a confidential sale without public bidding, offered when the nature of the property or the sales strategy justifies it. The transaction is conducted directly with targeted buyers.
Online auction: a digital auction open for a defined period. Bidding takes place exclusively online, with a countdown specific to each lot.
