"The recurrence of our sales, the importance of the lots sold and the regular world records allow us to obtain controlled results. This was reflected today, on the occasion of the 35th auction featuring Asian Painters, by the sale of 99.6% of the lots by value! Moreover, we are keen to organise our sales with the constant concern for a fine artistic, human and commercial adventure. The quality of our relationships allows us to work in confidence with both new and loyal clients. The quarterly sales of Aguttes Peintres d'Asie are thus one of the most important events for collectors.

Big names in modern Vietnamese art at auction
Maternity (lot 5) by Vũ Cao Đàm fetched €488,480, and the artist thus totalled €966,400 with 4 of his works. A major subject in classical painting, motherhood is also one of Vũ Cao Đàm's recurring themes, and this sale offered two more by this complete artist. These paintings fetched €220,520 (lot 8) and €156,000 (lot 9).

Lot 5
VŨ CAO ĐÀM
(1908-2000)
Maternité, circa 1950
61 x 46 cm
Sold for €488,480

This catalogue allowed us to appreciate the multidisciplinary nature of this artist through three different mediums: silk, a noble material in vogue at the end of the 1920s in the workshops of the Indochina School of Fine Arts; oil, to which he devoted a large part of his life, in contact with Chagall in particular, whom he rubbed shoulders with in Saint-Paul-de-Vence; and finally, sculpture, an art that Vũ Cao Đàm was particularly fond of and in which he would specialise. A terracotta entitled Head of a Tête de jeune garçon (lot 10) provoked a bidding battle to €101,400.

Lot 10
VŨ CAO ĐÀM
(1908-2000)
Tête de jeune garçon, circa 1945-1950
Terracotta, signed on the reverse 20 x 6 x 10 cm - 30 cm with the base
Sold for €101,400

Works by another artist achieved a million-dollar total: €1,074,730 for seven lots by Mai Trung Thứ. Remarkable results were achieved for drawings by this artist: €29,900 for Étude préparatoire pour Mme M. C. devant un paravent (lot 2) and €17,810 for Portrait de jeune femme à la jupe à carreaux (lot 22).

Lot 4
MAI TRUNG THU
(1909-1980)
Jeunes filles aux coussins, 1961
19.5 x 89.5 cm
Sold for € 360,880

Mai Trung's paintings were among the best results of the sale. The 34 previous sales organised by Aguttes have brought his work, which had long remained confidential, back into the limelight. It is now attracting a real craze among international collectors. Whether of young girls or landscapes, Mai Trung Thứ pays tribute to the beauty of the women of his native country by making them one of his favourite themes. Jeunes filles aux coussins (lot 4) fetched €360,880, and Pommes (lot 12) and L’écharpe bleue (lot 7) followed closely behind with €297,080 and €271,560 respectively. Bidders, probably sensitive to the provenance of L’écharpe bleue, gave pride of place to this small format, which was part of the Collection of the Princess of Annam, wife of Emperor Hàm Nghi, El-Biar, and which praises female grace and elegance.

Lot 7
MAI TRUNG THU
(1909-1980)
L’écharpe bleue, 1942
30 x 21.7 cm
Provenance: Collection of the Princess of Annam, wife of the Emperor Hàm Nghi, El-Biar, Algeria, Private collection of a local contractor who worked on the construction of the princely residence (offered by the previous one as a thank you for many services) Private collection, South of France (great-grandson of the Algerian contractor, brought back around 1962 and passed on by the family since)
Sold for €271,560

Another very fine auction, with the lacquer virtuoso: Lê Quoc Loc! This artist has recently achieved record sales on the art market, and Les rapides de Cho Bo (lot 6), at €462,960, is a second world record ex-aequo. The work presented here, composed of six panels, is in keeping with the artist's creative style: full of lush vegetation with a warm and shimmering palette, it presents a clever blend of lyricism and nature. The artist strives to enhance her Vietnamese culture, and if this screen is a showcase for her talent, it is above all a true tribute to Vietnam.

Lot 6
LÊ QUỐC LỘC (1918-1987)
Les rapides de Cho Bo, 1942
100 x 32.7 cm
Sold for €462,960

During this sale, 9 lots exceeded €50,000. As a precursor for Asian painters, Aguttes never ceases to discover artists and to showcase them. Once again, rare artists were presented in the auction room: Dinh Van Dan (€18,200 for lot 19) and Na Duc Thu (€18,200 for lot 23). With Nguyen Trung, Aguttes opened up to Vietnamese contemporary art and sold at its Abstraction (lot 81) price: €23,035.

Second part of the 3 October 2022 session, Arts of Vietnam

"From three former French private collections, Chinese porcelain exported to Vietnam was a great success. With their decoration depicting the metamorphosis of the carp into a dragon, two large bowls used at the court of Emperor Thiêu Tri (1841-1847) attracted all eyes by collecting more than €40 000."
Pierre-Alban Vinquant, auctioneer

3 - Lot 57 – Chine pour le Vietnam, Période de l’empereur Thiêu Tri, Important bol en porcelaine bleu-blanc - 15 000 €

Chinese export porcelain for Vietnam, better known as "bleu de Huê", has caught the attention of enthusiasts. In the 18th century, the influential Trinh family developed a passion for Chinese porcelain. The white paste of these porcelains, made from kaolin, and the brightness of their Persian cobalt blue glaze were unmatched. Designed and decorated according to models provided by Vietnamese artists, the "bleu de Huê" porcelains illustrate the synthesis that took place between the Chinese ceramic workshops and the cultivated elite of Vietnam to give rise to forms and decorations without equivalent in China. The two exceptional bowls used at the court of Thiêu Tri (1841 - 1847) (lots 56 and 57) are a perfect example of this and fetched €23,750 and €15,000 respectively.
