ASIAN WEEK CONCLUSION

Art of Asia. The world of the collector, May 31, 2022 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (92)

Selection of enameled biscuits from Mr. L's collection
« Mr L's collection was a real success at the Asian Art auction on May 31. There were frantic bidding battles, unprecedented results for enamelled biscuits, and the observation of a strong and diversified market for high quality pieces. The collection effect, the provenance and the rarity of certain objects presented inevitably contributed to the success of the sale.»
Johanna Blancard de Léry, head of the Asian Art Department

181 lots were included in the Asian Arts catalog. The Collector's World, and 83% of them found buyers and totaled 1 271 283 €. While Asian professionals and amateurs from Hong Kong and various Chinese provinces were present throughout the sale, many French, English, German and American buyers also bid.
Dedicated to the singular collection of Mr. L., the first part of the sale consisted of about a hundred pieces of sancai and turquoise biscuits and enamels, whose themes are as unusual as they are symbolic. Collected in the 1920s and 1960s, the majority of the enameled biscuits come from prestigious houses: Pierre Saqué, L.MICHON, Raufaust, L.Wannieck... This set alone totaled €867,449.10, and among the highest bids several lots come from this collection, which has been built up over three generations, since the end of the 19th century.

A large sancai enameled porcelain dish (lot 74), 18th century China, fetched €96,200 while a yellow, turquoise and blue enameled stoneware finial (lot 65) fetched €50,700. 98% of the lots from this collection were sold.
The second part of the sale also focused on private collections and rare objects. A quadrangular white jade vase (lot 147) provoked a long bidding battle to €52,000.

Asian Painters, Major Works, June 2, 2022 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (92)

« The Asian week totaled 7.37 million euros. The bidding was very dynamic, particularly for works testifying to the teaching provided at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine at the beginning of the 20th century, sold on June 2, 2022. Bidders came from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, England, and also from Europe and France. »
Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier, Asian painters expert

Modern Chinese art opened this auction dedicated to Asian painters, with two completely unknown oil paintings by Sanyu, acquired before 1940 by a Russian collector living in Belgium. These two paintings, because of their very early dating for Sanyu, shed a beautiful light on his work, and enrich his catalog raisonné. They now join a large collection in Taiwan.

« I am very sensitive to offer to each of my clients a tailor-made accompaniment of availability. They can contact me at any time and thus participate fully in the sale of their property. My goal is to give them access to the world's greatest collectors in a simple way »
Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier, Asian painters expert

Sanyu (1895-1966)
Le maître de piste, Monsieur Loyal, à cheval, 1926  Oil on canvas.
27.2 x 19 cm
Provenance  Henri-Pierre Roché Collection, Paris  Collection Alexandre Netsa - Mamonoff / Marynen (acquired before 1940)  Private collection, Belgium (by transmission of the precedents in 2003)

450 200 €

These two paintings combine European and Asian influences in their technique: while Sanyu adopted oil painting from the West, which he discovered during his apprenticeship at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, he kept the assured gestures of his training in China. Le maître de piste, Monsieur Loyal, à cheval, 1926 (lot 203) fetched €450,200 while La théière jaune sold for €175,000.    While 85% of the lots in the sale were sold, 100% of those in the section dedicated to Vietnam found buyers, and 39% of them exceeded €150,000. The collection of Mr. and Mrs. T, alone, totaled € 695 000. From this group of 5 works, comes, among others, Femme à la robe verte et enfant, sur la table un bouquet jaune de Lê Phổ (lot 243), which obtained 207,760 €.

Lê Thị Lựu (1911-1988)
Ink and gouache on silk.
45.8 x 38.4 cm
PROVENANCE  Private collection, France (acquired in 1971)  Private collection, France (inherited in 1990)
437 440 €

Ink and gouache on silk.
73 x 53.8 cm

794 720 €

Mai Trung Thứ, a key artist at Aguttes, once again stood out to connoisseurs with, in particular, the highest bid in this sale: €794,720, for En plein air (lot 220), closely followed by Romance au clair de lune (lot 222), which fetched €514,000.

Four of Alix Aymé's works, presented at the Paris Colonial Exhibition, were sold for a total of €797,280. In 1931, more than 60 works by this ethnographer were exhibited at the Colonial Exhibition, including 47 paintings and 8 pastels in the Laos Pavilion. At the end of the exhibition, 30 of Alix's 47 paintings were sent back to Laos, and traces of them have been lost to this day. No work by Alix Aymé was reserved for the Musée des colonies, which was then being set up. These facts make it all the more valuable for the painter's family to keep this set of four works, which were sold on June 2.

These 33rd and 34th sales dedicated to Painters of Asia totaled nearly 6.1 million euros, and the 35th sale is scheduled for October 3, 2022 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
