Editions Privat Provenance: Ancienne collection privée, Normandie Georges Artemoff was born in 1892 in Uryupinsk, a provincial town in the Don region of Russia. The son of a military doctor, he seemed destined for a career in the army. His mother however taught him how to draw and paint and her artistic streak soon rubbed off on the young man who made but a fleeting stay at the Cadet School. At the Rostov Fine-arts school where he studied for three years, his great gift for art turned many heads and the brilliant student won prize upon prize. Following his first solo exhibition at just sixteen years old, he went on to study at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin. When the government awarded him a scholarship he chose to go to Paris in 1913. He was welcomed by his friend the sculptor Ossip Zadkine who lent him his studio and introduced him to the great artists of Montparnasse such as Pascin, Krémègne, Modigliani and Picasso. Both his talent and reputation continued to grow and he became a key figure of the Russian community based in Paris as well as a member of the Union of Russian Artists in France in 1922. The 1930s were successful years for Artemoff who focused most of his attention on sculpture. He exhibited with the "Animaliers" artists in 1931 at the Galerie Edgar Brandt where he presented two sculptures entitled "Biche blessée" (Wounded doe) and "Poisson" (Fish) and regularly took part in the Salon des artistes décorateurs. The three works which we are presenting, each more striking than the next, belong to Artemoff's remarkable sculptural period when he borrowed from the Art Deco style which had blossomed in Paris during the 1920s.
