Jean-Charles Blais

Estimate and rating: Jean-Charles Blais (born in 1956)

A painter of torn posters and silhouettes

Born in Nantes in 1956, Jean-Charles Blais made a name for himself in the early 1980s with works created on torn wall posters. He exhibited for the first time in 1982 at the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux, then established himself among the leading figures of French contemporary art. His career led him to explore recycled urban materials, painting, collage, assemblage and, later, digital media, while giving central importance to the fragmented human figure and the pictorial gesture.

A body of work between matter, figure and urban media

From the outset, Jean-Charles Blais has used superimposed advertising posters as a medium for his creations, exploiting tears, layers and traces of collage as visual signs of an urban memory. He treats the silhouette – often massive, truncated, sometimes faceless – as a recurring motif. His work has evolved towards painting, drawing and collage, then towards installations and digital creation, always with a focus on the medium, the streak, the fragment, the surface and the presence of the figure in space.

How can you recognise a work by Jean-Charles Blais?

Blais's characteristic works are distinguished by: a background made up of torn, superimposed or re-glued posters; a human silhouette or fragmented body, often faceless or out of frame; a play of visual layers, collages, bold colours (red, black, ochre), and a style that combines the spontaneity of collage with the rigour of pictorial technique. More recent works may incorporate fabric, cut paper, digital media, or large-format prints.

Recognition and exhibitions

Jean-Charles Blais has exhibited regularly since the 1980s in France and internationally, notably in Paris, New York, Munich and Tokyo. His work features in major public collections. The artist is also involved in public art projects (e.g. for underground stations) and explores new digital media in his practice.
