A bridge between East and West

Born in Paris in 1962, Fabienne Verdier embarked on a pictorial quest at a very early age, which led her to immerse herself in China from 1983 to 1992, where she studied painting and calligraphy with the great Chinese masters. Upon her return to France, she set up her studio in the Vexin region and developed an abstract style of painting that articulates the forces of nature, gravity, gesture and materiality in a suspended space-time. Between East and West, she constructs a universal pictorial language based on the energy of gesture and the resonance of the inner world.

A painting of gesture and energy

Fabienne Verdier's work is based on a demanding process: after preparing deep and vibrant backgrounds, she executes a single stroke using monumental tools that she designs herself. Suspended from a mechanical device, she paints with giant brushes, guided by gravity and the movement of her body. Each stroke is a condensation of energy, a moment of controlled tension between control and letting go. This approach gives rise to works of great intensity, where painting becomes a physical and spiritual experience.

How can you recognise a work by Fabienne Verdier?

Her characteristic works are distinguished by their monumental format and powerful brushstrokes. Powerful black or coloured lines, created in a single movement, unfold against light, deep or slightly iridescent backgrounds. The broad, fluid brushstrokes become the imprint of a breath. Some canvases evoke abstract landscapes, others fields of energy or invisible flows. This style, both minimalist and expressive, combines rigorous brushwork with freedom of composition.

Recognition and exhibitions

Since the 2000s, Fabienne Verdier has established herself as one of the leading figures in contemporary French painting. Her works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions in France and abroad, and feature in major public and private collections. She has collaborated with museums, architects and musicians, exploring the dialogue between visual arts and other disciplines. Her career reflects a constant exploration of the relationship between painting, movement and thought.
