Our upcoming 20th-Century Decorative Arts & Design sale, to be held on 29 February, will spotlight a selection of furniture created by the French designer Pierre Chapo (1927–1987).

Born in Paris in 1927 into a family of craftsmen, Pierre Chapo discovered woodworking and materials in the workshop of a naval carpenter he met in 1947. Trained in architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts on the Quai Malaquais, he drew inspiration from Greek and Roman classics as well as from the works of Bauhaus masters. Chapo developed his distinctive style through his travels in Scandinavia, England, and North America. Throughout his life, he continually refined his techniques. His career gave rise to furniture that aligns with the functionalist demands of contemporary domestic life, while placing singular emphasis on traditional craftsmanship.

In 1958, together with his partner Nicole Lormier, a painter and sculptor, he founded the Galerie Chapo in Paris’s 5th arrondissement. There, he presented his first pieces of furniture alongside a wide range of decorative objects, lighting, ceramics, and Scandinavian design furniture.

Renowned for furniture characterized by pared-down forms and the use of solid wood, Pierre Chapo is a key figure in the history of design in the second half of the 20th century, alongside role models such as Charlotte Perriand, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier.
