Maurice Estève and Bourges: A Story in Colour
« It is light that I seek through colour » - Maurice Estève
A major figure in 20th-century French abstraction, Maurice Estève (1904–2001) was born in Culan, in the Cher region. He settled early on in Bourges, a city with which he formed a deep and lasting bond. There, he developed a body of work marked by light and geometry, often inspired by the landscapes of Berry.
In 1985, Maurice Estève and his wife Monique donated a significant collection of works to the city of Bourges—oils, watercolours, drawings, and collages—laying the foundation for what would become the Estève Museum. Inaugurated two years later, in 1987, within the remarkable setting of the Hôtel des Échevins, a listed historic monument, the museum now houses over 260 works, offering visitors a comprehensive insight into the artist’s world.

Maison Aguttes has had the privilege on several occasions to present works by Maurice Estève at auction. Some have achieved remarkable results, confirming the sustained interest of collectors in the artist’s vibrant palette and his visual language that blends stylised figuration with lyrical abstraction.
