The MK8 represents a significant evolution in the Pursang’s design and styling. At this time, Bultaco embarked on a visible modernisation programme, featuring redesigned lines, revised equipment and refined finishing touches, to meet the demands of a rapidly changing motocross market. The machine gained in sophistication without losing the essence of its identity—that common thread linking every generation of the Pursang to its origins.
Its 250cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine was, by this stage, a powerplant with a well-established reputation. Eight generations of development had produced a reliable, powerful and distinctive engine, a solid foundation upon which Bultaco continued to build methodically.
1974, however, was a year in which dark clouds began to gather over the Spanish motorcycle industry. Japanese competition was becoming increasingly formidable, and the room for manoeuvre for European manufacturers was gradually shrinking. The MK8 was produced against this tense backdrop, which in no way detracted from the machine’s quality, but lends this model a special flavour for those who know how the story unfolds.
A Pursang from the last golden age, before the difficult years cast a shadow over Bultaco’s fate.
