1968 – Citroën DS 21 M Cabriolet

A French masterpiece: the DS Cabriolet.

When the DS convertible was launched, the press was full of praise. *Le Figaro* ran the headline: “A stunning new model: a convertible with exceptionally clean lines.” *Paris-Presse* added: “A feast for the eyes. ’ Incorporating all the technical innovations of the saloon, no European convertible would match the beauty or comfort of the DS for several years, aided by the superiority of its Citroën hydropneumatic suspension, which was ahead of its time. In the end, 1,365 factory-built convertibles were produced based on the DS 19 and DS 21 between 1960 and 1971. 

The DS 21 convertible presented here was first registered in France in 1968 and was originally fitted with a manual gearbox. It was registered as 279 QZ 27 when, 11 years later, it left France for Italy, where it was bought by a music engineer who used it in the summer and drove it very little. He moved to the USA and, unfortunately, was unable to export his car there, so he decided to sell it in Milan 19 years later. 

The second Italian owner bought the DS for his daughter and also used it very little; from 1997 to 2006, it shared a garage filled with sports cars… The car was restored, starting from a very sound condition, in the early 2000s.  The current owner bought it in 2006, at which point the car had always been in northern Italy and the odometer showed around 150,000 original kilometres.

Extensive mechanical work was carried out to ensure it could be driven with confidence over long distances. More recently, the clutch, timing chain, engine mounts, braking and hydraulic systems, steering box, etc. were all serviced between 2023 and 2024. All work is documented with invoices, which can be viewed in the file. Naturally, it also comes with its Citroën certificate of authenticity.

Today, this exceptional DS is in superb condition and, above all, runs flawlessly, as our test drive will demonstrate; driving a DS Cabriolet on a summer’s evening is always an unforgettable experience.
