A legendary WLA restored to road-going specification by the painter François Bruère
From the outset of the Second World War, the US government commissioned Harley and Indian to produce motorcycles meeting precise specifications, featuring a 4-speed gearbox, a cardan shaft drive and an air filter suitable for extreme conditions
Over 90,000 WLA (for Army) models were manufactured during the war, and production of the WLC (civilian) continued for several more years.
Many military Harleys, either salvaged or sold through surplus channels when decommissioned, went on to enjoy a quieter second life in civilian use, unless they were modified and converted into choppers.
The motorcycle featured on these pages was rebuilt and restored by François Bruere, a painter specialising in motorcycles and cars, and the official painter of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Please note that, despite its civilian appearance, its serial number is in fact the engine block’s foundry number, as neither the engine nor the frame is stamped.
