In 1956, Derbi was a company in the midst of expansion. Founded in 1922 by Simeó Rabasa i Singla as a bicycle manufacturer—the ‘Derivados de Bicicletas’ from which the brand takes its name—it ventured into motorisation in the immediate post-war period and gradually developed a range that grew in engine capacity and ambition. The 98cc model belongs to this generation of intermediate machines—above the moped, below the proper motorbike—which made up the bulk of Spanish production at the time and met the mobility needs of a population beginning to aspire to more than just a motorised bicycle.
Its 98cc two-stroke engine is a simple and robust piece of machinery, built with the solidity of a Basque—or rather, Catalan—manufacturer, whose reputation for quality craftsmanship was beginning to take shape during those formative years. With this engine capacity, the machine offered performance far superior to the 49 and 65 cc mopeds dominating the Spanish market, with enough power to tackle secondary roads and gradients with an ease that smaller-capacity machines could not match.
1956 was an early and pivotal year in Derbi’s production history; far from the world titles that would come a decade later, the company patiently laid the foundations for what it was to become. A 98cc model from this era is now a considerable rarity, as Spanish mopeds from the 1950s have almost entirely disappeared, having fallen victim to intensive use in a country that did not yet preserve its vintage machines.
