Italjet was founded in 1966 in Bologna by Leopoldo Tartarini, a racing driver turned manufacturer and motorcycling adventurer who had travelled the world on a motorbike before deciding to build his own. From its earliest years, the company stood out for an approach that was decidedly different from its contemporaries: machines with a bold style and original technical solutions, designed to surprise as much as to transport. Bologna was then the world capital of sports motorcycling, and Italjet found fertile ground there for an uncompromising creative vision.
The De Luxe was one of the first expressions of this philosophy applied to the moped. Whereas most of its contemporaries were content to offer economical mobility without any stylistic ambition, the Italjet De Luxe boasted an elegance and attention to detail that immediately set it apart from the crowd. Its 50cc two-stroke engine is a reliable and well-built piece of machinery, but it is its presentation—sleek lines, meticulous finishes, and attention to every visible detail—that makes all the difference in a category unaccustomed to such refinement.
1968 was one of Italjet’s earliest years of production; the company had only been in existence for two years, and every machine produced still bore the mark of a founding passion that remained entirely intact. A model from this inaugural generation is now a considerable rarity: Italjet was not yet well-known, its early production runs were limited, and time has done the rest.
A rare and elegant piece, for a connoisseur of fine Italian engineering in its most distinctive early form.
