Motocross is a constantly evolving discipline and Bultaco has had to adapt. That is why the Pursang Mk 5 stands out clearly from previous versions; its engine is more powerful and responsive, its braking more effective and its suspension has greater travel. Meticulous work has been carried out to minimise the bike’s weight, and the fairing has been radically redesigned, moving away from angular shapes, although the mudguards feature a more conventional style that reflects the rapid changes motocross was undergoing at the turn of the 1970s. The sport was evolving rapidly, as were the riders’ demands, and the Barcelona-based brand responded with a thoroughly redesigned machine whilst retaining the essence of what made the Pursang special: lightness, responsiveness and character.
Its 250cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine continued to evolve, refined through five generations of uninterrupted development. By this stage, the Bultaco engine was a mature, well-known and respected piece of machinery, whose intrinsic qualities had been confirmed season after season on Europe’s most demanding tracks.
The MK5 is often regarded by connoisseurs as the beginning of the Pursang’s golden age, a pivotal generation between the early founding versions and the later models that would take the machine to its sporting heights. A status that makes it particularly sought-after on the collectors’ market.
