The 1963 Derbi Especial 125cc is a model of particular historical significance, and one of the most ambitious creations from the Mollet del Vallès-based manufacturer during those formative years when everything was still to be built.

In 1963, Derbi was a company undergoing radical change. The range was expanding, engine capacities were increasing, and the brand was beginning to look beyond the Spanish market with growing confidence. The designation ‘Especial’, in Derbi’s nomenclature of the time, did not simply refer to an enhanced version of a standard model. It identified a deliberately distinct machine, built with particular care and intended for a clientele demanding the very best that the Catalan manufacturer could produce in this engine capacity.

In 1963, the 125cc was the most ambitious engine size in the Derbi range, positioning the brand on the cusp between mopeds and proper motorcycles, and aimed at riders who had outgrown mopeds and were seeking a machine capable of meeting higher expectations. Its 125cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine is a powerplant built to the exacting standards of a manufacturer beginning to develop the technical expertise that would bring it glory in competition: lively, well-built, and with a distinct character that places the Especial clearly above the standard production models in the category.

The presentation reflects this ambition: meticulous finishes, enhanced equipment, and an overall coherence that speaks to a manufacturer attentive to every visible and invisible detail. A machine built to last and to impress, in a Spain that is beginning to demand more than the bare minimum from its domestic manufacturers.
