The Rex represents a little-known yet fascinating chapter in Catalan industrial history. Designed by the automotive engineer Wilfredo Ricart, a leading figure in Spanish mechanical engineering who had previously worked for Alfa Romeo, and produced by Construcciones Mecánicas Rex, S.A. in Barcelona between 1953 and 1959, this auxiliary engine bears witness to a genuine technical ambition in a Spain then in the midst of economic reconstruction.
The Rex’s design is distinguished by a final drive shaft that directly drives the rear wheel, a more sophisticated solution than the simple friction roller adopted by most of its contemporaries. The range also included complete mopeds, featuring a pressed steel frame and Curtes link-type front suspension, a detail that reveals a genuine commitment to innovation.
The example shown here, dating from around 1955, is a 65cc engine mounted on a bicycle.
Produced over a period of just six years, the Rex is now extremely rare. A piece for connoisseurs, at the crossroads of Catalan industrial history and precision engineering.
