In 1966, Ducati was a company undergoing radical change. Following the Cucciolo years and the small post-war machines, the brand had grown, diversified, and was beginning to build the sporting reputation that would make it a global legend. But the Borgo Panigale factory was simultaneously producing a full range of light vehicles – mopeds, motorised bicycles and small motorcycles – which made up the bulk of its commercial output and funded the sporting ventures that would make it immortal.
The 48TS belongs to this popular yet little-known range. Its 48cc four-stroke engine, a direct descendant of the founding Cucciolo, refined and modernised over twenty years of development, is a mechanical marvel of remarkable sophistication for its displacement. Whereas its Italian and Spanish competitors were using two-stroke engines, Ducati persisted with the four-stroke approach – quieter, more economical, more durable, and embodying the expertise the Bologna-based manufacturer has cultivated since its inception.
The TS designation, standing for Turismo Sport, clearly positions the machine within the Ducati range of the time, halfway between everyday practicality and the joy of riding. A coherent synthesis, typical of a manufacturer that knows no production without ambition, even on its most modest machines. The 48TS benefited from this favourable context, built in the same workshops that were simultaneously producing the first major Ducati sports bikes. To own a 48TS from this year is to hold in your hands
With its 12mm Dell’Orto carburettor, 1.8 hp and 5,600 rpm, the Ducati 48 TS was already part of a dynamic of competition and sportiness.
