The 1963 Montesa Microscooter 60 is one of the most unusual and endearing machines the Barcelona-based manufacturer has ever produced, and a doubly historic piece in more ways than one.
The story of its creation is telling. Faced with the Vespa’s meteoric success in Italy and the scooter craze sweeping across Europe, Montesa decided in 1963 not to sit on the sidelines of this booming market. Lacking the time to design a machine from scratch, the Barcelona-based company chose a pragmatic and original approach: to produce, under licence, a design from the Italian firm Laverda, adapting the engine capacity to 60 cm³ to meet the requirements of Spanish legislation and avoid the obligation to fit footrests. A decision that made the Microscooter the first and only Montesa with a four-stroke engine in the brand’s entire history, right up to the modern Cota models.
Its 59 cm³ four-stroke single-cylinder engine, fitted with a Dell'Orto carburettor, produces 3 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. The single-plate wet clutch and three-speed gearbox, operated from the handlebars, complete a mechanical setup of remarkable consistency for the category. Top speed: 65 km/h. The machine accommodates two passengers – a rare level of comfort for such a modest engine capacity.
Produced from 1963 to 1969 in very limited numbers, the Microscooter never achieved the commercial success hoped for; caught between the practicality of a proper scooter and the performance of a 75cc model, it remained a niche product during its lifetime. This low-profile history now makes it one of the rarest Montesas and one of the most sought-after by serious collectors.
