Peugeot is one of the oldest and most diversified companies in French industry. Founded in 1810 as a steelworks, it entered the bicycle market in 1882 and the motorcycle market in 1899, becoming one of the world’s first manufacturers of motorised two-wheelers.

Movesa, Motores y Vehículos S.A. is the Spanish subsidiary established to produce Peugeot models under licence for the Iberian market. Set up in Spain against the backdrop of the industrial development of the 1950s, it adapted and manufactured French machinery locally for a rapidly growing Spanish clientele. The BB1 was one of the first fruits of this collaboration: a moped faithful in spirit to the French model from which it was derived, yet bearing the specific characteristics of a locally produced vehicle designed for a market with particular requirements.

Its 50cc two-stroke engine was a simple, robust and economical mechanism, promising accessible mobility for a Spain in the midst of economic reconstruction. Its sleek lines, meticulous finish and the reputation of the Peugeot lion made it a serious contender in what was then a highly competitive market.

1958 was one of the first years of production for the Movesa BB1; an example from this inaugural generation is now a considerable rarity. Almost all Spanish licensed productions from this era have disappeared, victims of heavy use and neglected maintenance.
