Motorhispania was founded in Sabadell, Catalonia, in the 1970s, a company that is part of the long Catalan tradition of light two-wheelers, alongside illustrious names such as Montesa, Bultaco and OSSA. In a rapidly changing Spanish market, where local manufacturers faced increasingly aggressive international competition, Motorhispania chose to focus on sport and character to stand out, a strategy that forged a clear and consistent brand identity.
The Sport version is the most assertive expression of this philosophy. Its 49cc two-stroke engine is a lively and spirited piece of machinery, tailored for a Spanish youth who want not just a means of transport but a machine that delivers pleasure. The sporty styling, performance-oriented equipment and attention to detail clearly set the Sport apart from the utility mopeds that dominated the market at the time – an ambitious proposition for such a modest engine capacity.
1981 was a difficult year for the Spanish motorcycle industry as a whole. Most of the major Catalan manufacturers had already disappeared or were on the verge of doing so, and smaller manufacturers such as Motorhispania had to redouble their ingenuity to survive.
