Clúa was founded in 1924 by Joan Clúa i Maluquer, initially as a diesel engine repair workshop, before moving into the manufacture of two-wheelers in 1949 under the successive names of CMC, MC and finally Clúa. The company set up on Pau Casals Avenue in Barcelona and, over the course of its thirteen-year existence, developed a remarkably diverse range, including mopeds, mopeds, light motorcycles ranging from 50 to 175 cc, and even a micro-spider coupé designed by coachbuilder Pedro Serra, a rival to the Biscúter, whose ill-fated venture would ultimately lead the company to bankruptcy in 1962. A fate as creative as it was unpredictable, typical of a Barcelona bubbling with mechanical ideas in those years.

The Gorrión, meaning ‘sparrow’ in Spanish, is the most iconic model in Clúa’s production line-up. First launched in 1954 with an open rigid frame, it was the brand’s flagship model throughout the decade. Version II, unveiled in 1957, was a significant and ambitious evolution: sportier, with improved suspension, featuring a telescopic front fork and rear suspension that gave it the silhouette of a true miniature motorcycle. Its 49cc engine, of Italian origin, reliable and well-built, forged a reputation for robustness and longevity that quickly spread beyond the borders of Catalonia.

Clúa was one of the first Barcelona-based manufacturers to design its machines specifically for women, a vision that was ahead of its time, of which the Gorrión is the most direct expression. Lightweight, manoeuvrable and elegant in its proportions, the Version II perfectly embodies this ambition of a machine accessible to all, built with the care of a manufacturer that makes no compromises on quality.
