Marcelino is a Valencian brand founded by Marcelino Bodegas, a craftsman and motoring enthusiast who established himself in the 1960s as one of the most inventive tuners and builders in the Spanish Levante region. His philosophy was simple and effective: sourcing engines from the best European manufacturers and integrating them into frames designed and built locally, with the care and ingenuity of a craftsman who puts his name on every machine he produces.
The choice of the Ducati engine is particularly telling in this regard. At a time when most Spanish builders were turning to local engines or generic Italian units, Marcelino opted for prestige and sophistication: a Ducati engine, with all that name implies in terms of build quality and sporting reputation. The four-stroke engine from the Bologna-based manufacturer, a direct descendant of the original Cucciolo, gives the Mini Marcelino a smoothness and durability that its two-stroke contemporaries cannot match.
The name ‘Mini’ says it all about the machine’s purpose: compact, lightweight, manoeuvrable, designed for the city and for young riders discovering motorised freedom in the bustling Spain of the late 1960s. A modest proposition in size, yet ambitious in its components.
1969 was a fine year for this Spanish-Italian partnership: Ducati was on the rise, Marcelino was at the height of his Valencian operations, and the Mini Marcelino epitomised that creative era when artisanal ingenuity and industrial excellence came together naturally to give birth to unique objects.
Extremely rare and doubly appealing, for a collector with an eye for the unlikely collaborations that enrich the history of European motorcycling.
