The 1956 Solex Orbea 49 cm³ is a rare piece born of the collaboration between two iconic companies: the French firm Solex, inventor of the friction-drive moped concept, and the Spanish firm Orbea, a Basque manufacturer founded in 1840 and one of the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula.
The mechanical principle of the Solex is remarkably ingenious: a 49 cm³ two-stroke engine mounted above the front wheel, which it drives directly via friction. Simple, robust and economical – a formula that proved its worth on the roads across post-war Europe.
The Orbea version, produced under licence in Spain, is now considerably harder to find than its French counterpart. A 1956 model, from the first decade of production, is therefore of definite interest to any serious collector.
A piece of history, understated and authentic.
