Bianchi is one of Italy’s oldest and most venerable manufacturers. Founded in Milan in 1885 by Edoardo Bianchi, it was one of the country’s first bicycle manufacturers, before branching out into motorcycles in 1897 and cars a few years later.
Mounted on this immaculate Bianchi frame is the Garelli Mosquito 38-B, the 38cc two-stroke auxiliary engine that powered post-war Europe. The B version, a refined evolution of the original model, offers superior reliability and robustness to the 38-A version, the result of initial feedback from intensive use. Its basic principle remains unchanged—a friction roller driving the front wheel—but its execution has reached a level of maturity that the early versions could only have glimpsed.
1954 was a late year for the Mosquito, whose success was beginning to wane in the face of the emergence of the first fully-fledged mopeds. A model from this year, mounted on an original Bianchi frame, is therefore doubly rare, bringing together two great Italian names on a single machine at a time when this formula was drawing to a close.
