The name Pullman is deliberately evocative. It refers to the famous luxury carriages of the American railways, synonymous with comfort, elegance and serene travel, and says it all about MV Agusta’s ambition for this machine. In a range dominated by sports models and competition machines, the Pullman claims a different purpose: that of a comfortable, refined touring bike, designed for the open road and for riders who prioritise comfort over raw performance.
Its 125cc single-cylinder engine is a refined and smooth unit, built with the usual care of the Cascina Costa manufacturer but geared towards suppleness and comfort rather than sporty liveliness. The wraparound bodywork, characteristic of the Pullman family, protects the rider from the elements and road spray, giving the machine a distinct road-going character that its sporty contemporaries cannot offer. A coherent and well-thought-out offering, typical of a manufacturer that knows how to adapt its technical excellence to different objectives.
1958 was a fine year for MV Agusta; its dominance in Grand Prix racing was total, and the road range benefited from the prestige of a brand at the height of its global reputation. This year’s Pullman was built on the wave of confidence of a manufacturer that knew it could do anything, and do it well.
Rare and endearing, for a collector with an appreciation for the lesser-known facets of a great Italian manufacturer.
