The Birdie is a distinctly Brazilian creation. Launched by Suzuki do Brasil in the 1980s, it was designed to meet the needs of a market seeking affordable and reliable transport: a simple, robust, easy-to-maintain two-wheeler capable of withstanding the sometimes extreme conditions of Brazilian roads and cities. Its 50cc four-stroke engine, a significant step up from the two-stroke engines that dominated the category, gave it the durability and running economy that immediately appealed to a pragmatic customer base.

The FB version, a refined variant of the Birdie range, represents a mature evolution of the model, featuring improved equipment, meticulous finishes, and mechanics brought to a remarkable level of reliability after twenty years of continuous development. By 2005, the Birdie was a fully realised machine, benefiting from all the experience accumulated by Suzuki do Brasil through its engagement with a demanding and uncompromising market.

Rarely exported outside Brazil and virtually unknown in Europe, the Birdie is today as much an object of curiosity as it is a collector’s item. A machine that tells a story different from that of the big-bore Japanese bikes: the story of an industrial giant’s successful adaptation to the realities of a local market.
