The Polaris-S Series 3 represents the most refined evolution of a family born in the late 1960s. Three generations of continuous development have produced a machine in which every detail has been rethought, refined and improved in response to a demanding clientele and an increasingly competitive market. The designation ‘S’ (for Sport), combined with the ‘Series 3’ designation, clearly signals a distinct offering, aimed at riders who refuse to compromise on character and performance in a 49cc class.
Its 49cc two-stroke engine in this version is one of the finest examples of Gimson’s production range: lively, spirited, and assembled with particular attention to the details that distinguish an ordinary machine from a desirable one. The overall design reflects the stylistic influences of the early 1970s: bold lines, confident colours and enhanced features that bear witness to the ambition of a manufacturer still at the height of its powers.
1974 was, however, a year in which the clouds began to gather for small Spanish moped manufacturers. International competition was intensifying, margins were shrinking, and regional manufacturers like Gimson had to redouble their efforts to justify their existence in the face of giants producing at incomparably lower costs. The Polaris-S Series 3 was built against this backdrop of tension, which paradoxically makes it all the more valuable – the product of a manufacturer that gave its very best when the pressure was at its highest.
