In 1956, Montesa was still a young company but already well-respected. Founded in 1944 by Pedro Permanyer and Francisco Bultó – the latter leaving in 1958 to found Bultaco – it had established itself within a decade as one of the most reputable manufacturers on the Iberian Peninsula. The Brio range was the commercial backbone of this period: a family of mopeds and light motorcycles designed for the everyday Spanish market, built with the care of a company whose ambitions far exceeded regional boundaries.
The Brio 91 is one of the most significant models in this range. Its 91cc two-stroke engine places it in an intermediate category particularly suited to the Spanish market of the time: powerful enough to tackle mountain roads and long distances with ease, yet affordable enough to appeal to a customer base that could not yet afford proper, larger-capacity motorcycles. A well-balanced and honest offering, typical of a manufacturer that knows its customers.
