The Galletto – meaning ‘little cock’ in Italian – was born in 1950 from an original vision: to create a vehicle that was a cross between a scooter and a light motorbike, capable of offering the comfort and practicality of the former with the handling and mechanical pleasure of the latter. A rare ambition for the time, driven by Guzzi’s engineers with the rigour and inventiveness that have characterised the company since its inception.
Its 192cc horizontal single-cylinder four-stroke engine, the absolute hallmark of Moto Guzzi, is a simple and reliable piece of engineering, equipped with a four-speed gearbox and a final drive via a cardan shaft. This represented considerable technical refinement for a machine of this displacement, at a time when most of its competitors were content with far more rudimentary solutions. Its large wheels, a feature that set it apart radically from contemporary scooters, gave it stability and handling unrivalled in its class.
1954 saw the launch of the 192cc version, an evolution of the first-generation 160cc model, with increased displacement to meet the expectations of a clientele that had quickly recognised the machine’s qualities. The Galletto of this generation is a mature and accomplished design, the result of four years of gradual refinement. This example is in perfect working order; it has been serviced and fitted with a new battery.
Today, the Galletto is a collector’s item in its own right: understated, elegant, and embodying a mechanical philosophy that history has never truly replicated. A piece for enthusiasts who look beyond the beaten track.
