In 1960, Derbi was still a relatively new player in the motorcycle industry; founded in 1922 as a bicycle manufacturer, it ventured into motorisation in the post-war period and gradually built up a range that grew in coherence and ambition. The GS, or Gran Sport in Derbi’s nomenclature, was one of the first overtly sporty models from the Mollet del Vallès-based manufacturer, produced at a time when the brand was still finding its footing between affordable utility bikes and machines built for pleasure.

The 65cc engine capacity is indicative of the context of the time. Before the regulatory change of 1962, which set the limit for licence-free mopeds at 50cc, 65cc was the standard capacity on the Spanish market: powerful enough to be desirable, yet affordable enough to appeal to a broad customer base. The GS makes full use of this regulatory loophole with a refined and spirited 65cc two-stroke engine, which foreshadows the more ambitious engines that Derbi would develop in the following decade.
