The 1955 Capriolo Aéro-Caproni 75 cc is one of the most refined and unexpected creations of the post-war Italian motorcycle industry, and proof that a company born to conquer the skies also knows, when it sets its mind to it, how to build exceptional machines for the road.

Capriolo is the motorcycle division of Aéro-Caproni, one of Italy’s largest and most prestigious aeronautical manufacturers, founded in 1910 by Gianni Caproni, a pioneer in bomber and transport aircraft. After the war, like so many other aeronautical industries, Caproni switched to civilian production, establishing Capriolo in 1948 and transferring its expertise in precision mechanics, lightweight construction and cutting-edge engineering to the new venture. A heritage that is immediately apparent in every machine produced, objects of such quality and sophistication that they betray their aeronautical origins.

The 75 cm³ is one of the most remarkable engines in the Capriolo range. Its single-cylinder four-stroke engine with a horizontal overhead camshaft and a forward-leaning cylinder, in a layout that irresistibly evokes aircraft engines, is a mechanism of a sophistication absolutely unrivalled in this class. Lightweight, precise and remarkably smooth-running, it bears witness to a manufacturer accustomed to working with watchmaker’s tolerances and aviation-grade materials. The four-speed gearbox, the pressed steel frame and the telescopic fork front suspension complete a design of rare coherence and elegance.

1955 was a fine year for Capriolo; the company was at the height of its production capabilities, its machines were recognised and respected far beyond Italy’s borders, and the 75cc model embodied the very best that Italian aeronautical engineering could bring to the world of lightweight motorcycles.

An exceptional piece for a collector with an appreciation for technical genius in its most refined and unexpected form.
