Echasa, Echave y Arizmendi S.A. is a company founded in 1914 by José Echave, initially as a workshop for the manufacture of handguns. After the Civil War, the company abandoned arms manufacturing for good to focus on bicycles, marketed under the Stark, Fenix and Echasa brands. It was during this pragmatic shift that the moped venture began, a natural progression for a company skilled in metalwork that sensed the tide turning in favour of motorised transport in 1950s Spain.

Echasa’s moped production spanned from 1954 to 1962, with very few variations from one model to the next; a deliberately streamlined range, produced with the consistency of a company that prioritised reliability over variety. The 65cc Model A is fitted with an engine manufactured by IRESA, a Madrid-based company, and is distinguished by a three-speed gearbox operated from the handlebars, a technical refinement that the company highlighted in its advertising, alongside remarkably low fuel consumption. Its slogan, “Echasa, para ir y volver a casa” (Echasa, to go and come home), says it all about the promise made to a clientele that expected, above all, reliability and economy.

Today, Echasa motorcycles are among the rarest Spanish machines to be found. Production was limited, usage was intensive, and time has taken its toll. A 1957 Model A is an exceptional find.
