GAC is a company based in Éibar whose origins date back to the mid-19th century, at the heart of the Basque metalworking tradition. Having survived the destruction of the Civil War, it relaunched itself in the manufacture of bicycles before signing a landmark agreement in 1951 with the French firm Motobécane to produce the famous Mobylette under licence for the Iberian market. A collaboration that would last over thirty years and make GAC one of the key players in the Spanish two-wheeler industry.
The AV44 is the Standard Telescopic version of the 1964 Mobylette range, a designation that sums up its key qualities. Powered by the 49cc AV7 Dbe two-stroke engine, mounted on a pressed steel frame with a rear fuel tank and telescopic fork, it represents the culmination of all the improvements gradually introduced since the start of Basque production, such as the telescopic fork introduced as early as 1953, automatic clutch and drum brakes. By 1964, the machine was fully mature, reliable and tried and tested, built with the metallurgical rigour of a Basque company that has never compromised on quality.
Weighing just 35 kg and delivering 2 horsepower at 4,500 rpm, the AV44 embodies the Mobylette philosophy in its most consistent form: lightness, economy and absolute reliability. An unpretentious machine that has become a sought-after collector’s item.
