In 1966, Derbi was a company undergoing a major transformation. The foundations of its future international sporting success were being laid, with engineers in Mollet del Vallès developing the machinery that would soon enable Ángel Nieto to secure the brand’s first world titles. Against this backdrop of technical excitement, the Gran Sport 74 cm³ was Derbi’s most ambitious offering on the civilian market: a machine that directly benefited from developments in competition to offer road riders the very best the company had to offer.

The 74cc displacement was a deliberate and significant choice. It positioned the Gran Sport above the 50cc moped market, offering extra power and torque that made all the difference on Spanish roads, whilst remaining accessible to a young and demanding clientele. Its 74cc two-stroke engine is a lively and spirited unit, built with the care of a manufacturer accustomed to extracting the maximum from every available cubic centimetre.

The name Gran Sport owes nothing to marketing. It denotes a truly distinctive machine, with bold styling, sporty equipment and meticulous finishes that reflect the ambition of a manufacturer whose name is beginning to make waves on the international circuit. A coherent offering, built by people who know what sport means.
