Flandria was founded in Zedelgem, West Flanders, in 1896 by the Claeys family, initially as a manufacturer of agricultural machinery. The transition to bicycles and then to mopeds took place in the post-war period, and the company quickly established itself as one of the most reputable manufacturers in the Benelux. At its peak, Flandria was Belgium’s largest moped manufacturer; its machines were used by generations of Flemish students, workers and families, and its reputation for sturdiness and reliability extended far beyond Belgium’s borders to conquer the Spanish, French and Latin American markets.

The Type 4020 was part of the Flandria range of the 1960s as a well-balanced and well-built machine, reflecting the methodical rigour of a Flemish company that did not do things by halves. Its 49cc two-stroke engine is a robust and tried-and-tested piece of machinery, built with the industrial rigour that characterises production in Zedelgem: reliable, economical and with a lifespan exceeding the category average.

1962 was a fine year for Flandria; the brand was in the midst of commercial expansion, its distribution networks were growing, and the range was diversifying to meet rising European demand. A model from this era in its original condition is now a considerable rarity, as Flandrias from the 1960s were used intensively and rarely preserved.
