The 1965 Honda CD Sport 50cc is a machine that perfectly embodies Honda’s strategy to conquer the European market during those years of rapid expansion, and one of the most appealing models in the Hamamatsu-based manufacturer’s 50cc range.

The CD Sport is a direct descendant of the Sport Cub C110, launched in 1960 as a sporty variant of the legendary Super Cub. The roots of Honda’s 50cc supersport models go back to the 1960 Sport Cub 110, whose four-stroke single-cylinder OHV engine, derived from the Super Cub, produced up to 5 horsepower – a technical sophistication that stood in stark contrast to the two-stroke engines then dominating the category in Europe. Mounted on a specially designed pressed steel backbone frame, the CD became one of Honda’s main utility motorcycles from 1965 onwards, alongside the Super Cub – a dual purpose, both sporty and practical, which perfectly encapsulates the ambition of the range.

The Sport version differed from the standard CD with a more assertive look and a more dynamic character – an elongated fuel tank, sleeker lines and meticulous finishes that reflected the high standards of a Honda then at the peak of its global conquest. Its 49cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine offers a level of reliability and smoothness unrivalled in the category; Honda simply cannot build anything else, even on its most modest machines.
