The Type A is Motobic’s very first commercial model. Born from the imagination and hands of Lorenzo Zabala, a young mechanic from Éibar who was not yet twenty when he fitted his first self-designed auxiliary engine to an Orbea bicycle in 1948, it represents the transition from craftsmanship to production, the moment when an idea becomes a business. The LZ engine, a 60 cm³ single-cylinder unit producing 1.7 horsepower, is a modest yet sincere piece of engineering, designed and manufactured in the metallurgical tradition of a town that has been working with metal for generations.

The principle was typical of the era: an auxiliary engine mounted on an ordinary bicycle, transforming the pedal-powered machine into an affordable and economical moped. But whereas many manufacturers of the time were content to adapt foreign engines, Motobic designed its own – a rare display of technical independence for such a young company, in a Spain still economically isolated from the rest of Europe.

1950 was one of the very first years of commercial production for Motobic; the company had only been in existence for two years, and every machine produced bore the mark of a founding passion that remained entirely intact. Almost all examples of this inaugural generation have disappeared, victims of intensive use and an era that did not yet preserve its machines.
