Sanglas is one of the most respected and original manufacturers in the history of Spanish motorcycling. Founded in Barcelona in 1942 by the Sanglas brothers, it immediately stood out for its ambitious technical approach: whilst its Catalan contemporaries favoured light and economical two-stroke engines, Sanglas persisted with robust and durable four-stroke engines, producing machines designed for law enforcement and demanding users. This unique approach forged a solid reputation, extending far beyond Spain’s borders.
In the 1960s, Sanglas expanded its range to include small-displacement models and partnered with Zündapp, a Munich-based manufacturer founded in 1917 and one of the leading names in European light motorcycles, to offer mopeds powered by German engines. The 50cc Zündapp forced-air-cooled engine was a particularly wise choice: this technical solution, which blows air directly onto the cylinder via an integrated fan, ensures optimal cooling regardless of the machine’s speed—a significant technological advantage over the naturally-cooled engines that dominated the category.
1965 was a fine year for this partnership: Sanglas was at the height of its reputation, Zündapp was producing some of its finest lightweight engines, and Spain was experiencing economic growth that fuelled demand for affordable and reliable two-wheelers.
A doubly rare piece, at the crossroads of two great European industrial traditions.
