The SX5 marks a turning point in the history of the Peugeot moped. Whilst the 101 series embodies tradition – understated, functional and timeless – the SX5 looks resolutely to the future. Its styling was strikingly modern for the time: integrated fairing, taut lines, and an overall look that stood in stark contrast to the utilitarian mopeds surrounding it on the market. Peugeot was targeting the youth of the 1970s who asserted their style and refused to blend into the crowd – a clientele who wanted to be seen as much as they wanted to be transported.
Its 49cc two-stroke engine is a tried-and-tested piece of machinery, drawing on all the experience Peugeot had accumulated in the manufacture of small-displacement engines since the 1950s. Reliable, economical and easy to maintain, the brand’s core qualities remain intact, simply clad in a bold new design.
