Rieju was founded in Figueres, Catalonia, in 1934 by Josep Ribas and Eduard Juanola, with the first two letters of each name forming the brand name. After the Civil War, the company relaunched its production of motorised cycles and gradually established itself as one of the most reputable and endearing Catalan manufacturers of its generation.

The choice of the Minarelli P3A engine is the most telling illustration of this. Minarelli, a Bolognese gem founded in 1951 by Vittorio Minarelli, was then producing some of the most refined two-stroke engines on the European market. The P3A was a carefully developed addition to the range, a 49cc three-speed engine whose name, Super Lujo – ‘super luxury’ in Spanish, an adaptation of the Italian version – denoted the most comprehensive and best-equipped model in the range. A top-of-the-range offering for the time, aimed at a clientele unwilling to compromise on quality.

1963 marked a year of full maturity for this partnership. Rieju was well-established, Minarelli was respected, and Spain was experiencing the early years of the economic miracle that would transform the country and boost demand for high-quality motorcycles.
