The Sprint was launched in Europe in 1965, but India has its own Vespa history. As early as 1960, Piaggio partnered with Bajaj Auto to produce Vespa scooters under licence on the subcontinent, a collaboration that would give rise to machines faithful in spirit to their Italian counterparts, yet bearing the specific characteristics of local production aimed at a market with particular requirements. Robust, reliable and mechanically accessible, the Indian Vespas of this generation were built to last under conditions of use that the European versions never had to face.
Its 150cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine is a tried-and-tested power unit, drawing directly on Piaggio’s expertise: flexible, economical and remarkably durable in the hands of users who do not always have access to an official service network. The pressed steel bodywork, Vespa’s defining feature since 1946, gives the machine its unmistakable silhouette and structural robustness.
A 1964 model from the Indian production line is today a doubly rare item: rarely exported, little known in Europe, and often overlooked by a collectors’ market that favours the Italian versions. A gap that the most discerning connoisseurs have long since filled.
A unique piece, at the crossroads of two industrial cultures.
