The Bultaco Metralla MK2 is undoubtedly one of Xavier Bultó’s most accomplished creations. Launched in 1966, it is a direct successor to the Metralla 62, yet represents a genuine evolution, with the stated ambition of being the best 250cc bike of its era.

Technically, it featured a 244cc engine, produced 27.6 hp and propelled its 102 kg to speeds exceeding 160 km/h. These figures immediately impressed the specialist press and the general public, making this bike a sensation from the moment it was launched.

It was on the British market in particular that it enjoyed its greatest success. Promoted with the striking slogan ‘the road-legal racing bike’, it was far from being a mere sports bike with competitive aspirations: it was a genuine racing machine, accessible to riders from independent teams. Many of them purchased one, and the results on the track soon confirmed what the brand’s archives proudly claimed: the Metralla MK2 was “the world’s fastest 250cc”.

The ultimate accolade came in 1967, at the prestigious Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, one of the most demanding and respected races in the world. Bultaco won the manufacturers’ championship in the 250cc class, a title that alone sums up the level achieved by the Catalan brand. In the riders’ standings, the picture is equally telling: the top European bike finished 7th, with the top six places entirely dominated by Japanese machines. The 10th and 11th places were also taken by Bultacos, and all this out of a total of just 20 finishers, making the achievement all the more significant.

The Metralla MK2 was thus much more than a technical evolution: it represented a turning point in Bultaco’s history, consolidating its international reputation and demonstrating that a small Catalan brand could compete with the world’s major manufacturers.
