The 1966 Derbi Gran Sport 49cc is the younger sister of the Gran Sport 74, and a model which, despite its restricted engine capacity, perhaps reveals even better than its big sister the mechanical genius of a Catalan manufacturer in the process of forging its legend.

For offering a Gran Sport in 49cc is a far greater challenge than in 74cc. Regulations impose their limits, and it is precisely within these limits that the talent of the engineers from Mollet del Vallès finds its freest expression. Getting the most out of a 49cc two-stroke engine, making it lively, spirited and a joy to ride without sacrificing reliability, is exactly the kind of exercise that prepares a manufacturer for the challenges of international competition. In this respect, the Gran Sport 49 is as much a training ground as it is a production machine.

In this configuration, its 49cc two-stroke engine is a powerplant refined to a higher level than what Derbi’s standard range offered at the time, featuring precise fuel delivery, optimised timing and meticulous assembly that immediately reveals the machine’s sporting origins. The Gran Sport range, with its assertive features and polished presentation, completes a coherent and desirable offering in what was then a highly competitive Spanish market.
